Precautions and Management to Bring Down Fever in Babies

You often worry and feel helpless when your child is suffering from fever. Though fevers are not harmful in themselves, the underlying cause can be. What Things Should I Do?

Here are some basic steps that you can take to make your baby more comfortable and manage their fever better:

  • Place a cool, damp washcloth on the forehead of your baby.
  • Dress the baby in a light layer of clothing. If shivering, use a light blanket until the baby is warm again.
  • Offer them plenty of fluids – little and often is the best approach. Helps prevent dehydration.
  • Check their room temperature. The room should be well ventilated and comfortable.
  • Stay indoors in a well-ventilated place, if outside, stay in the shade.
  • Give fever-reducing medication as recommended by a doctor.
  • Be careful with the dose – amount and timings.
  • Do frequently check and track your baby’s body temperature.
  • Watch for new symptoms like rash or pain and consult with a doctor immediately.
What Things Should I Avoid?
  • Don’t underdress or overdress your baby. They tend to lose heat more easily through their skin.
  • Don’t double up on medications before consulting with a doctor.
  • Don’t give alternative fever-reducing medications than what’s recommended by a doctor.
  • Avoid over-the-counter cough and cold preparations for babies.
